If Second Life isn’t effective for real world marketing, no one told high-end guitar manufacturer Gibson.

The guitar maker has set up an island in the virtual world where avatar-fans can get a free virtual guitar or pick up Gibson T-shirts to wear. Guitars and Second Life have a long history – a promotional machinima called “The making of Suzanne Vega’s Second Life Guitar” remains one of the most well-known films about the virtual world.

On hand for the Wednesday launch was Fleetwood Mac vocalist/guitarist Bob Welch, who took the avatar form “Bobwelch Magic.”
