Timeless Prototype: Multi Gadget for sale?
By Adam Reuters
Scripter extraordinaire Timeless Prototype has a long analysis about intellectual property and patents in Second Life. In the end he determines that some basic functions are just too important to patent:
To put a nail in the coffin of patents in Second Life for “basic needs” scripts, I have decided to hold true to my name - Timeless Prototype - and that I will not patent my ideas that are implemented in Multi Gadget and furthermore I give everyone permission to copy my ideas that are in the Multi Gadget to make their own products. All I ask in return is a little credit where credit is due.
In the comments section, Timeless actually floats the possibility of selling Multi Gadget — memorably described as a “virtual Swiss Army knife on nuclear steroids — to the highest bidder:
One of the options I have and is something I wasn’t planning on doing just yet is selling off the Multi Gadget intellectual property and not having to deal with the problems myself. Comes with the assets of good will, a significant active user base, an update system and a very decent script base. One owner, good condition, good runner. Serious offers only please.
One bidder already as of 1400 PST — comments are the new classifieds!
